BBQ on TalkWorthy Radio with Toni Jorgenson of Rib City Grill on SiriusXM 143 BYU Radio

Standard

Here is the BBQ recipe from Rib City we promised on last week’s TalkWorthy radio show!

Suggested by Toni Jorgenson on the TalkWorthy Radio Show! Find her on Facebook/ribcityutah or
Twitter @ribcityutah!

Ingredients:
• 1 cup Ketchup
• 1 teaspoon Yellow mustard
• 1/2 cup Brown sugar
• 1 tablespoon Honey
• 1 can Coke
• Then you can add other ingredients depending on what you like. Try:
• Raspberries
• Liquid Smoke
• Tabasco
• Chili Powder
• Chili Peppers
Method:
To grill ribs, you can start with Baby Back Ribs or St. Louis Style Ribs.
Smoker:
Use your favorite wood type. At Rib City, we use oak. You can use a rub to infuse the flavor into the ribs. Then smoke them for 4 hours at 225 degrees. After that, wrap them in tin foil with a small amount of water and lather them with sauce. Wrap them in foil and grill them on a medium grill (225 degrees) for another 2 hours. The sauce and water create a steam effect.
For “Fall Off The Bone” ribs, you can let them cool down for ½ hour, then grill them with more sauce to warm them up.
Grill:
If you only have a BBQ Grill not a Smoker, get your favorite wood chips in a foil pan add some water to it making the wood chips wet. Then put the wood chips on the direct heat and cook your Baby Backs on the indirect heat with your favorite rub for 2 hours then repeat step 2 for another 2 hours or until Tender meat should fall off the bone from the steam effect.
Marinade:
If you want to skip the smoking, you can marinate the ribs for at least 2 hours in your refrigerator. (Rib City recommends marinating them overnight.)

Can I make my life better in time for my 30 year high school reunion?

Standard

So, a year ago my Daddy died . . . it wasn’t fun to watch him go and life just wasn’t quite the same this last year without him. Not only did I miss him but I started to gain weight . . . with my two weekly radio shows (TalkWorthy on SiriusXM 143) and Healthy Wealthy Wow Surthrival! on 1480 AM and Utah Valley Live . . . along with my eMedia clients I just didn’t take time to care for myself like I should have.

Since Dad has died I have started promoting a reserve food business (GOFoods) and an organic food business (Green PolkaDot Box) and written a book called Choose Surthrival! out in May! They call me the Power Mom but why don’t I feel so powerful . . . in fact I want a nap nearly every day!

So, with so many fabulous things going on in my life (finally) I just haven’t felt that great health wise . . . I told this to my friend, Cori Dyer of the Make Life Better Foundation and she suggested I try the Make Life Better Transformation while we were at the Kids Choice Awards in March. I really stewed about that. Do I really have time to do an entire transformation? Was it really even possible?

Cori Dyer and Kim Power Stilson hosting at a fund raising event!

Then . . . the news hit. My high school friend, Arlene Inbody Ericson, posted a note to me on Facebook asking if I was going to our 30 year high school reunion?

At first all I could think was . . . I have a daughter who just turned 18 and now I have a 30 year class reunion? And, then I started thinking about the 15 or so pounds I have gained since my Dad died . . . and then I looked at the calendar . . 12/13 weeks? Could I do it? Then I thought of the Make Life Better Foundation and their Transformation offer and I called Cori.

Now I have 12 weeks and a goal to make my life better in time for my 30 year class reunion. And, by the way my book will be out about that time . . . can I really make a transformation happen . . . we will see . . .

Katie from the Make Life Better Foundation called me today and said I would have a weekly coach and some of their products to start with . . . so tomorrow I will start Week 1 Day 1 of my quest to Make My Life Better by my high school reunion . . . please join me on the journey . . . I am going to need your help . . . Kim Power Stilson Go class of 1982!!!!

TalkWorthy Radio Talks about the Need for Speed and BYU’s Electric Blue

Standard

Friday on the TalkWorthy Radio Show by talking with those who know something you may not about . . . the need for speed! 175 miles per hour in the Electric Blue Car! Listen in as Perry Carter, talks about the world land speed record set by the electric car designed by Brigham Young University engineering students. Join host Kim Power Stilson and her guest Retired BYU professor Perry Carter on the TalkWorthy Radio Show this Friday at 4 pm EST/ 2 pm Mountain Time on SiriusXM 143 BYU Radio

Perry Carter

An electric car designed and built by BYU engineering students set a world land speed record for its weight class, averaging 155.8 mph over its two required qualifying runs, one of which was clocked at 175 mph.

The milestone marks the end of a seven-year quest of more than 130 students, led by Perry Carter, who just retired as an associate professor.

“This is a wonderful closure to 31 years of teaching at BYU and many projects,” Carter said after the record was certified. “But this is the one that takes the cake. I’m done.”

“This is like Christmas morning,” said Jeff Baxter, a former student captain on the project who returned to Utah to witness the record-setting runs. “But like five Christmas mornings – or seven Christmas mornings!”

In land speed racing jargon, the car is called a streamliner, meaning it has a long, slender shape and enclosed wheels to reduce air resistance. Students custom-built the lightweight carbon fiber body after modeling it on a wind tunnel program on a computer. The aerodynamic performance and lithium iron phosphate batteries helped the car reach its high speeds.

With one inch of ground clearance and an extremely wide turning radius, the streamliner can run safely only in places like the Bonneville Salt Flats. Jim Burkdoll, president of the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association, drove the car on its two record-setting runs, certified by the Southern California Timing Association – Bonneville Nationals, Inc.

The streamliner, named “Electric Blue,” competes in the “E1” class, which includes cars weighing less than 1,100 pounds. Because electric cars rely on heavy batteries, engineering a speedy vehicle at such a light weight is very difficult. That’s why there were no prior certified speed runs for this class, although unofficial standards reached the 130s. The BYU team completed a qualifying run at 139 mph last year, but failed to complete the required second run when the car rolled, damaging the car’s body but not the driver’s.

About half the students who have worked on the streamliner program over the years have been manufacturing engineering technology majors, about 40 percent mechanical engineering majors, and the rest from various other disciplines. Many worked on the car as part of an annual capstone course, but most were unpaid volunteers. The primary sponsor of the project is Ira A. Fulton, after whom BYU’s College of Engineering and Technology is named.

Kelly Hales is a BYU electrical engineering major who came to BYU to prepare for a career working on electric cars. He joined the streamliner team and took over as student captain of the project when Baxter completed his BYU MBA in April and left to work for a space exploration company. Baxter is one of many alumni who have gone on to success in their careers – several working on electric cars or competitive car racing – after helping develop the streamliner.

“Students who study music need to give concerts, students who study dance need to perform, and students who study engineering need to engineer things and compete to see how they work,” said Carter, the team mentor. “Experiential education is a key aspect of every program.”
