This week’s Talk Radio Topic is “Breathing Out Sadness and Fear—The Art of Living Foundation’s Solutions to Trauma and Depression
Salem, UT – April 2011 – Planetary Streams Talk Radio Network today announced Diana Hoffman, Licensed Professional Counselor, Clinical Hypnotherapist, Trauma Specialist and host of “Healing Talk ” radio show will talk about “Breathing Out Sadness and Fear—The Art of Living Foundation’s Solutions to Trauma and Depression.”
According to Diana, trauma core symptoms are stored in the brainstem. Modern rapid release therapies directly activate the brainstem in some way, and use sensation rather than words to access and change trauma symptoms. What more effective way to activate the brainstem than by using breathing patterns—as breathing is directly controlled by the brainstem. In addition, research shows that different emotions produce several different—but very typical—breathing patterns. This information is at the heart of a remarkably rapid release therapy called “Sudarshan Kriya Yoga. (SKY)
Research has demonstrated SKY to be impressive in its impact both on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and on all sorts of mood disorders. A recent study compared SKY treatment in 240 survivors of the Asian Tsunami who had developed PTSD. The study found that PTSD levels as measured by the PCL 17 inventory dropped from a highly-distressed average of 67 points, to an average of 27 after just four days (a total of 8 hours) of treatment with SKY techniques. This profound change in distress levels (a change of 40 points) compares to the control group, whose distress dropped only four points in six weeks. The SKY group not only maintained their progress but continued to improve after treatment. At the six month follow-up, test scores had dropped to an average of 20. (17 is the lowest score possible on the PCL-17, and a score below 25 is considered normal for civilians) Notable also is the fact that the therapy was delivered to groups of thirty individuals by a single facilitator—making it incredibly inexpensive and efficient to provide the treatment.
The results with depression are equally impressive: A variety of studies on SKY have been published in the Journal of Affective Disorders. In one study, SKY techniques were used for the treatment of melancholic (severe) depression, and were compared with the antidepressant Imipriamine and with Electroconvulsive therapy. All three treatments became effective after about 3 weeks. By the end of the 4 week study, SKY had produced remission in 67 % of the study group, as measured by the Haminlton Depression Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory, eeg measurements, and changes in blood hormone levels. By comparison, Imipramine had produced remission in 73 % of patients, and ECT in 93%. Although SKY was less effective than ECT, breathing techniques are so safe, simple and inexpensive compared to 12 sessions of electroshock, the breathing techniques present themselves as a potent and viable alternative, and there is a very good argument that clients might want to try the breathing techniques first. Like other empowering self-help approaches to depression, SKY treatment generates a low relapse rate and gives the client a tool to use if depression begins to return. In fact, SKY is so helpful in preventing relapse that it is also being studied as a follow-up treatment for more conventional depression therapies. (In contrast with ECT, which is estimated to have a relapse rate of 50% or higher in the first six months, if not followed by other support treatments.)
